A Great Message You Need to Hear

Recently, Dr. Alan Keyes dropped by the Crossroad Baptist Church in Pensacola, FL for their God and Country day.  Dr. Keyes has been a ardent supporter of truth through difficult times even public mockery.  The message he delivered fits right in with our message here - vote your conscience!

Vote Your Conscience

Across the country today millions of Americans will head to the ballot box and vote for the candidate of their own choosing, or will they?  My fear is that many of the millions voting today will not select the candidate they feel best represents their beliefs, but who have the best chance of winning.

Here in Massachusetts we have four candidates on the ballot for governor.  Each candidate is pro-choice, supports stem cell research, supports homosexual rights, and supports easier access to gambling.  What is a conservative to do?  But more than that, what is a Christian to do?

The first solution some suggest is to just sit this one out – don’t vote.  I cannot do that.  I do believe that as a citizen of this nation, I ought to be involved in electoral process.  Whomever controls the state house will set the legislative agenda (or at least attempt to) for the next four years.  The amount of power and influence this person wields is too much for me not have a voice in the selection of this person.  If I do care about any of this issues I mentioned above, I must head out to polls and have my vote be counted.

The second solution some suggest is to hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two (or in this case four) evils.  In this election Kerry Healey(the Republican candidate) is seen as the lesser of the evils.  A vote for her would take away another vote from the front-runner, Democrat Deval Patrick.  A Patrick win would spell disaster as a reign of liberal terror holds the Bay State hostage.  Yet, I would counter that the lesser of two evils is still in fact evil.  A vote for Mrs. Healey is still a vote for abortion, homosexual rights, stem cell research and more gambling.  Either way the election turns out, my values are rejected.  Voting for Healey may bring in economic relief and judges who are not as liberal as Patrick nominees would be, but still unborn children will be executed, homosexuals will marry and slot machines will be installed throughout the state.  This is the ultimate lose-lose situation.  Again, what is a Christian to do?

Allow me to give you my solution – Vote your conscience!  I have decided to cast my vote for the write-in candidacy of Rev. Michael Carl of the Constitution Party.  He is a conservative Christian with the right ideas of how government should run.  He is pro-life, defends the Biblical definition of marriage, and will stand up for the values and principals I hold dear.  How can I not vote for such a man?

I know, this man probably does not stand a chance of winning.  I know, I am splitting the Republican Party and opening the door for a liberal Democrat to wreak havoc (although I think some who have accused me of this greatly overestimate my influence here among the MA electorate).  However, I must do what is right.  What is not right is voting for people who promote ungodly and anti-Biblical policies.  I want nothing to do with them.  I am a fundamentalist.  I make no apology for that.  As a fundamentalist, I preach the Biblical doctrine of separation.  What I preach from the pulpit, I live out in the ballot box.  I will not support candidates of any party who promote abortion or homosexual rights.  I cannot do it.

May I remind everyone reading this post that my decision to do what is right is not dependent upon its outcome.  I am not to vote for the person I think has the best shot of winning.  I am to vote for the best candidates with the right stance and the right philosophy
For those suggesting that a truly conservative third party candidate would only serve to split the GOP and throw us into liberal hysteria – let me say this.  Why would anyone want to work so hard in campaigning and supporting a candidate only to have a not-so-bad outcome?  The truth is the end result of electing the not so bad candidate is to support the same liberal agenda supported by Democrats. We have surrendered the issues we deem important.  That to me is worse than electing the liberal Democrat straight out.

Am I just throwing away my vote?  No!  I look at it in a different light.  First, how can I use my precious vote, the largest voice I have in politics, and waste it on a candidate who despises my views?  Second, why would any conservative, Biblically-minded candidate ever chose to run for office in the future if he knows he cannot even count on his own base to support him!  Wasting my vote on candidates I disagree with only lends them support and encourages others of their kind to run in the future.

I cannot fathom how people plan to defend their Biblical position by supporting candidates who directly and actively oppose them.  How will anyone ever take us seriously as we defend the right to life and then hypocritically usher in candidates who defend the right to execute these unborn children?  We will never have our values and principles stood for in government if we refuse to back those who support them!  If we vote for pro-choice pro-homosexual agenda candidates, the only possible and logical outcome will be more pro-choice and pro-homosexual agenda candidates winning and running our government.

Let me stop here and say the real change we need is not political but spiritual.  The only way this country will ever change is if you and are zealous in our evangelistic efforts.  Even under Conservative Republican rule, people die and go to hell. People who are pro-life and anti-gay marriage still have a sin nature.  Even the issues I mentioned here are spiritually discerned.  The greatest need of our country, state, city and street is the gospel of grace through faith.   I do believe that my soul-winning efforts are more important than any political campaign I may ever be involved in.  In fact, just this week I turned down an invitation to attend a political rally because it conflicted with our church’s visitation night.

So, why would I even bother mentioning any of this - Because I have no desire to shoot myself in the foot.  I have wept at times thinking of the millions of abortion committed each year.  I will preach form my pulpit with all my might against this heinous from of execution.  Yet, if allow candidates to waltz into office thinking there will be no protest of their wicked agenda, those execution numbers will sky rocket.  I cannot preach one thing from pulpit and idly stand by as it happens almost before my eyes.  Action is needed.  I am not calling for another political action committee or national movement.  But, the very least I can do is show up on election day and vote my conscience.

Please remember that your vote counts!  Let YOUR voice be heard.  Don’t allow inferior candidates to drown out your right to have your vote count.  Imagine what we could do as Bible-believing Christians if we all just decided to vote our consciences!  These candidates who at one time never stood a chance would all of a sudden at least have a grass roots effort that could lead to real change.  But instead of real change, we throw away our vote and allow anti-Biblical voices to rule the day.  How sad.  You would figure that Christians ought to at least vote like Christians…

(Let me interject here that what I am espousing here are my own views.  This is not necessarily the view of the other contributors here on Fundamental Perspective.  Good men, men I deeply respect and admire, disagree with me and adamantly so!  But the purpose of this blog is to spark discussion, so let the discussion begin!)

My E-mail Plea

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I would like to take the time here and urge you to vote a week from today. But I am not asking you to vote Democratic or Republican. I am asking you to vote your conscience.

I don’t know about you, but I have been greatly dissatisfied with this year’s crop of gubernatorial candidates. For years I have voted straight down the GOP ticket, but conscience tells me this year I just can’t do it. The Massachusetts State Republican Party has nominated a woman who is pro-abortion, pro-embryonic stem cell research, pro-civil unions and pro legalized gambling. I cannot in good conscience cast my vote for such a candidate, not any more.

The argument in favour of voting for the GOP candidate basically boils down to the lesser of two evils idea. Because Kerry Healey is more conservative than anyone else on the ballot, a win for her would make things not as bad as they could potentially be should another candidate win. May I remind everyone that a lesser of two evils is still evil? We will never get what we want if we vote for candidates who oppose our desires and wishes. Simple logic tells us that.

I understand that the real change this state needs does not come from the State House but from God’s house. Only the Word of God can change lives for eternity. I am a preacher, not a politician. Yet, as a preacher, how can I continue to preach one message from the pulpit and support an opposing message in the ballot box? My conscience will not allow me to do this any longer. I must earnestly contend for the faith once delivered. It is about time that we as Christians voted as Christians.

I am not calling for a national movement or the setup of another religious political action committee. I am simply urging you to vote for candidates not based on perceived success, but based on conscience. Do the right thing. If we continue to ignore candidates we agree with simply because we don’t think they have a chance of winning, they never will have a chance of winning! We don’t do what is right because we think it will be successful. We would never promote that idea in our churches, so why promote that idea in the ballot box? In this election, I am supporting the Massachusetts State Constitution Party write-in candidacy of Michael Carl. I would urge you to do the same.

Write in Michael Carl, 109 Eutaw Ave., Lynn, MA 01902 (the address must be written in as well) for governor.

To Go Against Conscience

luther_back_sm.jpg

This is one of my favorite days of the year, Reformation Day.  On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther with the nailing of his 95 Theses changed the world forever.  His courageous stand for the gospel of grace through faith stands as a testimony to us today.

Today, I had the great joy of recounting the legacy of Luther to my students in school.  Usually as I ponder the events surronding theDiet of Worms, the phrase “Here I Stand” echoes throughout my mind.  Yet today, I find myself drawn to another portion of this famous quotation.

“…my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise, God help me. Amen.”

This morning I sent out an e-mail urging others I knew here in MA to vote their conscience.  Some of the responses I got back were sympathetic to my frustration.  Many were not.  Several preacher friends of mine took me to task, playing out a scenario where I was opening the door for Deval Patrick to walk in and reek havoc here in the Commonwealth.  However each one of these people shared my assessment of Kerry Healey and wished for a better candidate.  They have made a deliberate decision to violate their own principals and support a candidate who, if elected will seek to protect abortion on demand, provide for civil unions and legalize gambling.

I stand with Luther and proclaim my conscience is held captive by the Word of God.  I absolutely refuse to vote for canidates who PROMISE to bring about evil, no matter what their party affiliation.  This greatly puzzles me.  I fail to understand how oneseeks to curb abortion on demand by voting for candidates who support it!  I cannot fathom how one seeks to promote the Biblical idea of marriage by voting for someone who denies it!  Am I alone here?  What am I missing?

It is sad to see good men thinking this way.  A vote for Kerry Healey is vote for abortion rights.  She promises to uphold the murder of unborn children.  This is definite.  What I dislike most about Deval Patrick, Christy Mihos and Grace Ross is what I dislike about Kerry Healey.

Now, I understand the problem with non-GOP candidates - fiscal issues.  Here, I do tend to prefer Healey over the rest and I do believe she has some excellent suggestions as part of her 50 point plan.  If Healey were elected, my wallet would rejoice.  But money is not everything.  Iplace morality over money.  I would rather they raise our taxes 200% than see one unborn child executed.  I would rather find myself unemployed than see civil unions adopted here in the Bay State.  Therefore, I cannot support candidates who promise to bring these things about.

It is high time we placed politics aside.  I feel ashamed of preachers willing to support the GOP at the cost of Biblical principles.  Will an Bible-believing, committed Christian ever be elected here in MA?  I don’t know how the Lord will work.  I do know that with God all things are possible.  I also known that if Bible-believing, committed Christians will never be elected if even fellow Bible-believeing, commited Christians refuse to lend their support.  It is time to stop cowering under the Republican banner and declare Christ above all.

Again, I urge the voters of Massachusetts to write in the name Michael Carl for governor.

My Endorsement for Governor

For weeks now I have agonized over the question of who to vote for in this upcoming gubernatorial election here in Massachusetts.  I have followed politics for many years and have always amused myself with keeping up to date.  Since I first registered to vote, I have been a died-in the wool conservative Republican.  Win or loose, I have voted straight down the GOP ticket in each election (with only one exception).  This year, I just cannot bring myself to do that.

The Massachusetts GOP has nominated Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey for the job.  Though I would agree with her on some fiscal and crime prevention issues, how can I reconcile them with these views:

Q: Tell me what policy of Gov. Romney’s you disagree with.
HEALEY: We’ve always disagreed on choice and I think those differences have only become more stark over time. And I respect that, I respect differences of opinion, but I’ve always been pro choice.
(2006 MA Gubernatorial debate on Fox News with Chris Wallace Sep 25,)
http://www.ontheissues.org/Governor/Kerry_Healey_Abortion.htm

In February she said she favors embryonic stem cell research, the subject of a bill that Romney unsuccessfully vetoed last year.
http://www.ontheissues.org/Governor/Kerry_Healey_Abortion.htm

Healey opposes gay marriage but favors civil unions, which positions her to the left of Gov. Mitt Romney on this issue. She supports a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages, but has said she would not support a measure allowing the state’s Catholic bishops to exclude gays and lesbians from adopting children from Catholic agencies.

Healey has said she is open to the idea of slot machines at the state’s racetracks, a stand that puts the lieutenant governor at odds with her boss, Gov. Mitt Romney. Her campaign manager, Tim O’Brien, said Healey does not want to see the racetracks close. But, he said, if slot machines become legal Healey wants to make sure lottery revenue — and thus local aid to cities and towns — does not suffer.
http://www.boston.com/news/local/politics/issues/gambling/

How can I vote for this woman?  As a Christian, I simply cannot continue to support candidates that promote the murder of unborn children, homosexual rights, and easier access to gambling.  I know the argument, we vote for the lesser of two evils.  Deval Patrick is much worse, therefore we vote Healey to make it not so bad.  That argument is growing old.  To vote for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil.  How can we ever expect to see real change take place if we keep voting for candidates who oppose our views.  If you keep voting for the wrong people, the wrong people win.  It’s just that simple.

Yes, but Kevin, real change only comes from the preaching of the Word of God.  With that I agree whole-heartily.  But why, as a preacher of the gospel, would I preach from the pulpit one message, and then from the ballot box support those advocating a completely opposing message?  My job as a preacher grows more difficult as sin becomes more accepted and accessible.  It simply has to end.
As a Bible-believing Christian, I am commanded to separate myself from evil.  I am to oppose it with vigor and disdain.  Therefore, I cannot continue to support the Massachusetts State Republican Party and I will not vote for its nominee.

So then, the big question is, what do I do?  I seriously consider even sitting this one out.  If God wanted me to vote, He would have given me candidates…  But sitting out is not the act of a responsible citizen.  So then what is a Christian conservative to do in liberal Massachusetts?  I began searching for a third party candidate.  However, the other two candidates on the ballot are worse than Mrs. Healey.

Sunday morning I began looking around for other options.  I then came in contact with Rich Selfridge, the Chairman of the Massachusetts State Constitution Party.  He and I began exchanging e-mails and I grew impressed with the party and its views.  Here are Christians supporting Biblical values, limited government and conservative fiscal policy.  This is exactly what I am looking for.  Who would have thought such a group would exist here!

Therefore, it is my honor and privilege to support the write-in candidacy of Michael Carl.  Mike Carl is the Co-Chairman of the Massachusetts State Constitution Party.  From the website, “Michael Carl is a pastor in Wakefield, MA, a free-lance writer and a periodic columnist with the Wakefield Daily Item.  He is also President of The Heritage Alliance, a pro-family, pro-life, pro-limited constitutional government public policy group.  He lives with his wife and two sons in Lynn, MA.”  You can read some of his writings here:

Red V. Blue:  Shame on Us

I give Mr. Carl my whole-hearted endorsement.  It is my prayer that many others will write in the name Michael Carl, 109 Eutaw Ave., Lynn, MA   01902 (the address must be written in as well).  Come Election Day, I look forward to casting my vote for a man whose policies I can fully support.
